Business 24 Oct, 2020 08:12 PM4 minutes to read Facebook is demanding that researchers disable a plug-in that monitors what US political ads are shown to each volunteer. Photo / AP Academics, journalists and First Amendment lawyers are rallying behind New York University researchers in a showdown with Facebook over its demand that they halt the collection of data showing who is being micro-targeted by political ads on the world’s dominant social media platform. The researchers say the disputed tool is vital to understanding how Facebook has been used to as a conduit for disinformation and manipulation. In an October 16 letter to the researchers, a Facebook executive demanded they disable a special plug-in for Chrome and Firefox browsers that they have distributed to thousands of volunteers across the US — and delete the data obtained. The plug-in lets researchers see which ads are shown to each volunteer; Facebook lets ...

“DILEEPA PODI PUTHU” Lyrics & Music:- Clarence Wijewardena “Cover Version”-  Lohan Samaratunga   How many times have we heard this phrase ?. This is a very special Sri Lankan song, composed by the late, great Clarence Wijewardena to portray the loving relationship between Father & Son, and now, many years later, what I think is a beautiful “cover” version of this song, done by Lohan Samaratunga, for his Dad, Kirthi, is a video that I felt would be appreciated by all our eLanka members & readers around the World. What was even more surprising to me, is that Kirthi Samaratunga is the Son of a certain Lieut.Comdr. Samaratunga of the Royal Ceylon Navy during the 1950 era, that I served under, so now, here am I, nearly 60 years later listening to his grandson singing on you-tube. I repeat, it is a small World, isn’t it ?.       The present Samaratunga ...

I hope you can appreciate the effort, time, money, inconvenience, determination, and pure ‘guts’ that has gone into these two projects. (No mean feat!!!!). Please see below. The Shipping Containers would have been transported from the Colombo dockyards (as I’m sure there are no other shipping ports nearer to these parts of Sri Lanka). Sir Thomas Maitland was assigned to Ceylon ( Sri Lanka ) as the British Governor General during the period of 1805–1811. Governor Maitland was a 46 year old bachelor who decided to construct his country residence on a breathtaking beachfront property at “Galkissa” ( Mount Lavinia ).  He was also known as “King Tom” and described in a biography as “a great human force, controlled by an iron will”. During this time, Maitland fell in love with a native gypsy dancer named Lavinia (Lovinia) Aponsuwa who was an extraordinarily beautiful mestizo girl of mixed Portuguese and Sinhala Rodi ancestry. He saw the local mestizo dancer Lovina for the first time at the welcoming party held in his honor on his arrival in the island. Lovinia’s father was the headman of the dance troupe. Sir Thomas was smitten by her smile and charms and soon found himself obsessed by her and ...

Coming to me from a close friend in London, Jude Goonawardane, is the tragic story of Sirima, a lesser known Sri Lankan Artiste, actually a classmate of his brother, who did not get the chance of being better-known, simply because of the innate jealousy of her partner who brutally ended her life, before she even had the chance to tread the boards of Showbiz to the fullest. It is a sad story folks, but coming from a man who “keeps tracks” of each & every Musician, Band, Group, in fact, what he does not know about every Lankan Entertainer, past & present, is not worth knowing, I have decided that all eLanka readers around the World should get their chance to know Sirima just that little bit better.    Desmond Kelly(Editor-in-Chief) eLanka.  Sirima Wiratunga! Sirima Nicole Wiratunga was born to a Sri Lankan father and a French mother on 14 ...
